Electrical and electronic parts are required to fit increasing functionality into smaller spaces at reduced system costs. Hence, injection molders are demanding superior grades of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) glass filled compounds from suppliers. High flow grades can help produce thinner wall parts, leading to weight reduction and decreased cost. High flow PBT grades can also help achieve more complex parts to accommodate more functions in smaller parts required by the electrical industry. Super High Flow resins enable thinner-wall parts that accommodate more capabilities. They also speed up processing and cut costs while maintaining good mechanical and heat performances. SABIC Innovative Plastics has raised the bar with a complete portfolio of glass filled Super High Flow Valox SHF resins offering twice the flow length of standard glass filled polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). With this comprehensive PBT product family, electrical and automotive part manufacturers have many choices when molding thin-wall parts such as connectors and excess voltage cut-off switches. The full line of these resins relieves the stress by providing greater design flexibility and increased productivity and capacity compared to other PBT resins. New grades added feature enhanced hydrolytic stability, low warpage and better weathering. The resins can be used even more widely- in warm, moist under-hood environments. Reduced cycle time by up to 25% due to faster injection rate and reduced cooling time, leads to more parts per min. This resin portfolio offers customers both flame-retardant and non-flame-retardant grades. Glass fiber levels range from 15-40%, with low warpage and hydrolytically stable choices. All grades offer best-in-class performance, beginning with superior flow properties combined with chemical resistance, mechanical and heat performances. By doubling the flow performance of traditional glass-filled PBT resins, these resin grades offer several important benefits: • Thinner-wall parts and more-complex designs (part consolidation) than were previously possible. • Reduced part stress, resulting in better dimensional stability and performance. • Reduced system costs by eliminating short shots (scrap), minimizing tool maintenance due to lower injection pressure, and reducing the amount of resin required. Since processing can be done at a lower temperature than conventional PBT resins, less energy for heating/cooling is needed. Duponts’ CRASTIN® grades are thermoplastic resins are based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin, which have been specially formulated for rapid crystallization during molding process and may contain uniformly dispersed glass. This thermoplastic resin family is known for properties like high strength, stiffness, excellent dimensional stability, outstanding chemical and heat resistance and good electrical properties. They are noted for their excellent melt flow characteristics, close molding tolerances and high productivity from multicavity molding. The combination of good physical properties, processing characteristics and competitive price leads to high value-in-use and lower part costs. Crastin® Super Fast resins are tailored to reduce molding cycle time with superior flow properties that enable filling of the mold at lower temperatures. The many features include mechanical and physical properties of stiffness and toughness, heat resistance, friction and wear resistance, excellent surface finishes and good colorability. They have excellent electrical insulation characteristics and high arc-resistant grades are available. Processing is simple, with good flow properties leading to short cycle times using standard injection molding machines. Post-molding operations such as welding, fastening, gluing, printing, painting, hot stamping and laser marking are also easy. BASF’s Ultradur® High Speed PBT has significantly improved new flow properties delivering measurable benefits over standard PBT grades in a variety of applications. The new easy-flow product is a really fast mover: depending on the glass-fiber content, it flows nearly twice as far as comparable standard Ultradur® PBT grades. Other characteristics of the polymer-like mechanical and thermal properties, density, shrinkage and hydrolysis stability - are not significantly affected by the process. The key to this flow improvement lies in the addition of a nano structured additive developed specifically for PBT. The good flowability makes the production of injection-molded plastic components less expensive and helps to save energy. These factors qualified the material to receive an eco-efficiency label from BASF. This label is awarded to products that perform better from an environmental and financial standpoint than comparable products. Benefits for injection molders include: • Advantages in Parts and Mold Design • Lower Molding Temperature and Shorter Holding Times • Faster Cooling Times • Shorter Cycle Times • Greater Output |
