Composites of Delrin, ABS or UHMWPE are able to withstand and meet requirements of harsh environmental applications.
Polygon's PolySlide® products are revolutionizing the motion control field with advanced composite cylinder tubing materials, providing high performance and value compared to aluminum and other similar metallic materials. The cylinder is composed of a tube of engineered composite material that has been specifically designed to meet pressure and usage requirements. The remainder of the cylinder is made from application dependent non-metallic material. The cylinders are made using advanced composite manufacturing processes and machining techniques. Assembly is done in a semi-clean room environment which prevents contaminants from entering the cylinder. These cylinder assemblies are said to offer significantly improved performance in corrosive environments and can outlast metal competitors. The engineered composite tube is lightweight and has a smooth bore finish which provides superior seal life and lubrication retention capabilities. The tube is also impact resistant, and can sustain the shock of 1 kg dropped from 2 m, in a scenario that would dent a typical metal cylinder rendering it inoperable and non-repairable. Sizing on these cylinders range from 0.25" to 4" ID bore sizes with larger bore sizing, of up to 20”, available on request. The finished cylinders can withstand working pressures of 100-125 psi, allowing for installations and seal configurations typical to specifications within the pneumatic industry.
Benefits of composite cylinders include:
• Low friction for reduced seal wear
• Lower weight, even lower than aluminum and comparable to magnesium
• Better corrosion resistance, allowing use in caustic environments
• Improved impact resistance
• Enhanced impingement resistance - resists denting
• Non-conductive
PolySlide® can be interchanged with any metallic cylinder material in a variety of tie-rod applications. Cylinders can be provided as needed, from a simple cylinder tube cut to length for customer assembly to a complete cylinder assemblies designed and built in-house as per customer specifications. Assemblies are available for numerous applications ranging from trucks to packaging equipment. The company also has the internal testing facilities to validate most designs. The in-house capabilities range from cycle testing burst pressure chamber with video analysis of failure mechanisms, to in-use frictional analysis.
Polygon’s Polyslide smart cylinder, a hydraulic sensing cylinder allows new options in having the electronic sensing component part of the cylinder tube, not mechanically affixed to the tube body or gun bored rod. The smart cylinder incorporates Sentrinsic's Capacitive Grounded Resistance Divider (CFRD) for low cost, high performance, non-contacting in-cylinder position feedback.
• Technology can sense units of measure traveled, vibration, or other data
• CGRD resolution is less than 0.020 in. (.5mm)
• CGRD works via resistive film along length of stroke
• Cylinder can relay signal to centralized location via wireless access
• Cylinder's outer metal tube keeps cylinder round
• Composite metal tube does most of pressure work
• Sentrinsic was founded to commercialize technology developed at Georgia Tech's Fluid Power and Motion Control Center
