Massive dips in margins and fuel prices have led to a huge decline in net profits in China's petrochemical industry. However, 2009 ushers some good news as demand is estimated to be better than in H2-08 due to cheaper feedstock, improved domestic demand and a boost to the economy due to Government spending. The industry is estimated to post earnings and turnover improvements in 2009, which, however, is unlikely to recover to 2007 levels. Global light vehicle sales is predicted to decline 14.7% from 2008 levels to 55.2 mln units in 2009. The automotive markets is not expected to emerge from the worldwide recession until 2012, later than previously forecast, due to worsening economic conditions. In USA , new vehicle sales have dropped from a high of almost 17.5 mln in 2000 to 13.2 mln in 2008, with a further decline to 10 mln projected for 2009. Electrical and electronic (E&E) applications - including housings, wire and cable and internals such as connectors, are the largest market for flame retardants in plastics globally. The need for fire resistance is increasing due to electronics miniaturization and higher temperatures in processing as well as use. Though flame retardants in E&E industry are growing strongly but pressures are increasing to replace halogen containing additives to halogen free additives. Read in Despite strong growth in E&E industry, flame retardants under pressure to convert to halogen free additives |
Colorants are one of the largest group of a broad range of additives and masterbatches that change appearance, functionality, performance, safety, cost effectiveness and processing efficiency of resins. Besides basic colorants, special effect systems, green technology, and new additive systems provide the industry with continuously expanding options for color and aesthetic solutions. Innovative combinations of colors, additives, and polymers can create new effects that convey a full range of innovative visuals including texture, reflectivity, luster, gloss, frost, etc. Read in Developments in Plastics Colorants |
Carbon nanotubes are excellent additives to impart electrical conductivity in plastics. Their high aspect ratio means that a very low loading is needed to form a percolating mixture in a polymer, giving greater retention of the base polymers' toughness. The global flame retardant chemicals market is growing and exhibits increasing potential. The compound annual growth rate is estimated at 4-5% for the total market up to 2015. This confirms the market potential of carbon nanotube application in flame retardant systems. Read more in Carbon nanotubes provide conductivity as well as improve fire resistance |
The current trend of minimally invasive surgical procedures demands new instruments, technologies and materials. To allow medical device companies to develop more minimally invasive procedures, DSM has introduced a high purity Dyneema fiber based on extra high pure PE grade, targeted to provide increased life and 25% greater strength than the original product. The company has also recently introduced newer products of particular benefit to the military. Read in

Polypyrrole can be added into other polymer matrix to achieve improved flexibility. Addition of antioxidants helps even at 5% level in LDPE, as they greatly eliminate decomposition. They do not completely eliminate oxidative degradation, but they markedly diminish the rate of auto-oxidation by interfering with radical propagation process. Read in Gamma irradiation resistance of LDPE can be improved by addition of polypyrrole
