Global operating rates at PVC plants have remained high, despite annual capacity additions, due to strong demand growth in most regions over 2005-2006. A slowdown in capacity additions will sustain high operating rates over the next three years, stabilizing the supply/demand balance over 2007-2008. After this period, operating rates are estimated to decline towards a trough in 2011. Read in Decline in PVC capacity utilization expected by 2011
A program has been developed to facilitate post surgery monitoring applications by physicians and patients using RFID enabled cell phones, particularly during the critical first 24 hours post injury or surgery. Physicians will monitor the status of damaged tissues using temperature, pressure and other sensors. Patients will be able to self-monitor their recovery from the comfort of their own homes. Read in
New skin patches will enhance post surgery monitoring and drug delivery
An innovative nanomaterial, when added to the polyme, increases the strength, durability and flexibility of nylon and other polymer-based products has been commercially introduced. The material has applications in a diverse range of both consumer and industrial markets. The material has commercial potential for applications that increase durability of a football helmet, enhance the aesthetics of fabrics, create more flexible body panels in cars to reduce vehicle damage and provide increased levels of driver safety. Carbon nanotubes are expected to take electronic devices to the next level. The hugely popular LCD and plasma screens are expected to be replaced by field emission flat screen displays (FED-TV). FED-TVs combine all the best aspects of CRTs, LCDs and plasma TVs into a single package. However, manufacturers are at present unable to compete with LCDs and plasma displays on a cost basis. This will get altered by carbon nanotubes. Read in
Carbon nanotube technology could supersede plasma and LCD flat screens
New developments in materials, processes and machinery were introduced at an annual meeting of Association of Rotational Molders (ARM). Read in New developments in Rotational Molding
