Asia Pacific region accounted for 44% of the global polyethylene demand in 2008, and for over 43% of the global PE capacity in 2008. The region accounts for nearly 50% of the planned capacity additions until 2015. To know about the strong PE demand regions, the leading PE markets in the global scenario, the PE capacity additions in the Asia Pacific region, demand-supply scenario of the various PEs in different regions of the world, etc, read
The MENA region is well poised to become the world’s petrochemical hub, building on its cost-advantaged feedstock position, rising global demand and proximity to demand-dense regions amid support from governments and local authorities. The region has emerged as a major competitor for the European chemical industry, which may decline dramatically in the coming years. A process in underway in Europe to identify and rationalize chemical plant and clusters made uneconomic in the economic crisis, allowing future investment to focus on those areas in which the industry remains competitive on the global stage. US$9 bln of EPC contracts were awarded in the Middle East in 2008 vs US$22.2 bln in 2006. A combination of rising EPC costs and shortage of ethane feedstock allocations has caused the industry here to slow down and led regional producers to re-evaluate the situation. Shale gas discoveries in the US and the ability to exploit these reserves have also placed USA in a highly competitive position. Newer capacities are coming onstream in demand dense Asia. Plant closures in Europe have been mostly accompanied with replacement capacity brought on stream, as producers tap into higher-growth market segments with higher-value-added products. Read more in
New formulations in biopolymers helps reduce dependence on non-renewable petroleum inputs and lower overall greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. A new compounded resin technology enables the production of injection molded parts with thermal dimensional stability up to 120º Celsius. Another team is working on boosting heat tolerance of bioplastics to broaden the range of applications. Renewable and compostable cellulose-based packaging films that provide the highest moisture barriers of any transparent bio-film on the market and the world’s first sustainable deep freeze packaging made from renewable resources have been introduced. In the past, some heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, lead and chrome, were used in the manufacture of plastic pallets and plastic crates. An EC article prohibits the placing on the market of packaging with a heavy metal concentration exceeding 100 ppm. At least 500 mln crates with a heavy metal concentration are still in circulation in the European Union, scrapping of which could lead to environmental issues. Will it be sound to allow the industry to carry on reusing and recycling old crates both from an environmental and economic perspective?
Plastics pipes are finding increasing application and are replacing pipes made from conventional materials in a spectrum of applications. Polypropylene producers have developed better grades for pipe applications. Some of the developments include grades for sewage and underground drainage systems and related products; storm water management systems; solid wall pipes for underground, non-pressure sewerage and industrial system; non pressure pipes for drainage and sewerage; soil & waste, flexible pipeline systems used in off-shore, deep-sea oil exploration. Flexible packaging constitutes 42% of the plastics packaging market of which polyethylene film makes up 40% and BOPP about 20%. It is a growing market that is benefiting from changes in lifestyle and demographics. Demands for sustainability and higher shelf life in packaging are pushing the film industry towards biodegradable barrier films and towards long-life films that extend product life and reduce waste. Global PVC demand was around 33 mln tons in 2009, falling by 1-2% vs a fall of 6-7% in 2008. Construction markets in developing countries are driving much of this increase in applications such as pipe, cable and profile. PVC formulations are currently evolving to take into account legislation against the use of heavy metal stabilisers worldwide, trends in flame retardants and the controversies over the use of some phthalate plasticizers.
