The global mulch film market was estimated at US$2.9 bln in 2015 and is expected to reach US$4.2 bln by 2021, growing at a CAGR of around 6.3% between 2016 and 2021, as per Zion Market Research.
Mulching is the process of covering soil around the plant root area with some material like grass husk or plastic. There are two types of mulching, organic and inorganic. Organic mulching contains husk, trash, dry leaves covering on the soil. Whereas inorganic mulching includes mulch film made with polyethene.  Mulch films are made with Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), EVA and reclaim. Inorganic mulch (mulch film) can be further classified as, clear/ transparent, black, colored and degradable. Mulch film market varies with type and so that with raw material moreover it also varies with season and type of crop. There are several factors effect and affect the mulch film market. Rising demand for high-quality crops is one of the major factor driving the mulch film market. The growing population exerts pressure on the agricultural productivity. In order to improve the productivity and meet the demand mulch films are used. Mulch films are being used in most of the regions because of its tremendous benefits such as increasing agricultural productivity and improving the crop quality by minimizing soil erosion and suppressing the growth of weeds.

Asia Pacific dominated the mulch film market for last two years and it is estimated to expand at highest CAGR during the forecast period. This region is continuously increasing and is expected to remain the largest market for mulch film due to improved purchasing power of the grower, economic growth, and high demand for better quality fruits and vegetables. High production and consumption in the countries like India, China are expected to grow the Asian market for much film. The high investment of the major companies like BASF SE (Germany) and Dow chemical company (U.S.) can be one of the factors of market enlargement in this region. Application of advance technologies in agriculture is expected to make North America a growing market for mulch films. The U.S., the third largest country in tomato and chilli cultivation is expected to be the fastest growing market for mulch film in North America, as mulch film is majorly used in tomato and chilli cultivation. In Ukraine, Spain and Poland, cucumber is produced on a large scale while Italy and UK are one of the largest producers of tomato and chilli respectively. As these crops gives better results in mulching method the usage of mulch film is high in Europe. The regulations for the usage of non-biodegradable plastics may affect the matured Western European market. Furthermore, the high installation cost of the films is expected to be one of also a big challenge for the market. Middle East is expected to be a potential market for mulch film as Middle East is the big producer of LLDPE which is one of the raw materials of mulch film. Since water is big challenge there the usage of mulch film is growing as it require adequate water.
